Another warm weekend? You betcha. With friends in to visit and spoil for a few days with Virginia sublime, we ventured out into it. It would be foolish not to.
Our destination ~ the Highland County Maple Festival. First Town: Monterey, VA.
Wandering through wares …
would, without question, take us to waiting in line for the kettle corn whose sweetness wafted in and out of other tempting confections
All the gems and jewels of a small Virginia town have to be enjoyed in full. Old homes and buildings are a thrill to seek out.
But to find a beaut like this? Pure joy. And a double score!
Stepping into creaky, hinged doors produces further fun finds.
On to the town of McDowell’s own country store…
where an enchanting step back in time perks up the senses.
Highland County’s Mansion House museum is free (donations appreciated) to investigate.
During the festival, period interpreters wandered about the front lawn.
Next year we are considering overnight accommodations in the area in order to to make a full day or weekend of festival stops. I know there is plenty more of interesting places and towns in Highland County we will be checking out.
